Meaning, definition and utility. Sources of demographic data- census, registration, ad-hoc surveys, hospital records. Demographic profile of Indian census. Rates and ratio of vital statistics. Fertility: Measurement of fertility – crude birth rate, general fertility rate, Age- specific fertility rate, total fertility rate. Gross and Net Reproduction Rates.
Measurement of mortality, crude death rate, standardization death rates, age specific death rate, infant mortality rate and cause of death rate with their merits and limitations. Decennial population census in India.
